Choices

He wondered, not for the first time, if he was making a mistake.  He looked across at the young woman.  She was lovely, no doubt.  Her golden blonde hair hung down her back, the way Buffy’s used to do.

“I’m glad you could see me this late,” he said.

She smiled.  Her attraction to him would have been obvious, even if he hadn’t been a vampire.  Even if he couldn’t hear her accelerated heart rate; scent her pheromones.

“It’s my pleasure,” she replied.

Her lips were full, luscious, and her body curved in the right places.  She would have been quite the snack, back in the day.

“You’ve been a big help to me, Candy,” he said honestly.

Her eyes met his, and held them briefly, before looking down.  Her lashes were full, without the need for mascara. “We all make choices.”

He couldn’t take things with Buffy the way they’d been.  The ambiguity, the playing on her terms.  He loved her, with all his heart, but his life had to move forward.  Now, there was no going back.

“The pear-cut is a wonderful choice, sir,” Candy said.  “Now, what size ring does your girlfriend wear?”
